Commonly Asked Questions about the Holy Spirit

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE "WITHIN" AND "UPON" EXPERIENCE?

The "WITHIN" experience is the rebirth of the human spirit. This is commonly referred to as being "born again" or getting "saved". This is the point where an individual receives Jesus as Lord and Saviour and the Holy Spirit comes within.

THE BORN AGAIN EXPERIENCE
John 3:3
Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

THE WELL OF WATER SPRINGING UP INTO ETERNAL LIFE
John 4:13-14
Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

DEPOSIT OF THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT INTO YOUR REGENERATED SPIRIT
Galatians 5:22-23
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

The "UPON" experience is the Baptism (immersion) in the Holy Spirit or being filled with the Holy Spirit. Jesus said in John 7:38, He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

THE INITIAL EVIDENCE OF HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM IS SPEAKING IN OTHER (UNKNOWN) TONGUES
Acts 2:4
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Acts 2:38-39
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM IS A PROMISE FROM GOD. IT IS FOR POWER, FOR SERVICE AND FOR THE MANIFESTATION OF THE GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT
1 Corinthians12:7-11
But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

DO I HAVE TO TARRY FOR THE HOLY GHOST? NO!

In the Book of Acts, on the day of Pentecost, we see the Holy Spirit is making His appearance for the first time by manifesting Himself upon those people in the Upper Room who were all on "one accord". The Holy Spirit is yet in the earth and we do not have to wait for Him. Look up these scriptures and study them for yourself:

Jesus promised the Holy Spirit (Luke 24:49)
Jesus told His disciples to tarry (Acts 1:4)
The outpouring of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1-4, John 7:37-39)
The born-again believer need only ask and receive (Luke 11:9-13)
When you pray/ask, believe you receive and you shall have Him (the Holy Spirit) (Mark 11:23,24)
The initial evidence of being filled with the Holy Spirit is speaking in tongues (Acts 2:4 and 10:46)

WHY SHOULD I SPEAK IN TONGUES OR BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT? WHAT IS THE BENEFIT?

Edify yourself (1 Corinthians 14:4)
Give worship and devotion to God (Acts 10:46)
Give thanks to God (1 Corinthians 14:15-17)
Build your faith (Jude 20)
When you don't know what to pray (Romans 8:26)
Your spirit prays (1 Corinthians 14:14)
For rest and refreshing for yourself (Isaiah 28:11,12)
For revelation knowledge (John 16:13)
For instruction and recall of the sayings of Jesus (John 14:26)

AFTER PRAYING TO RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT, IF I DON'T SPEAK IMMEDIATELY, AM I STILL FILLED? YES!

(Read Luke 11:13) When you believe and receive, it is based on God's Word, not on your feelings. Realize there are certain hindrances to speaking, such as, strongholds of the mind, your natural thinking, unforgiveness in your heart, fear of trusting God, doubt, waiting for a feeling, denominational teachings and beliefs, etc. God wants to fill the born-again believer. The born-again believer must receive. God will not force His way in. The Holy Spirit is a gentleman and He will not violate your free will.
