I bind and rebuke any unclean and hateful bird sent against my life by the enemy in the name of Jesus (Revelation 18:2).

I pray these unclean birds would be caged in the name of Jesus (Jeremiah 5:27).

I bind and rebuke any unclean bird that would attempt to nest in my life in the name of Jesus.

Let every wandering bird be cast out of its nest in the name of Jesus (Isaiah 16:2).

Let Your presence drive every unclean bird away from my life (Jeremiah 4:25–26).

Let every fowl of heaven operating against my life be consumed in the name of Jesus (Zephaniah 1:3).

Let these birds flee and fly away at Your rebuke (Jeremiah 9:10).

Following a request from a reader to give a bit more background information on birds, and especially owls, we are pleased to provide the following addendum to this article. The words Owl or Owls are found in 14 verses of the Holy Bible and with 16 matches in total.

There are five different meanings to the two words which are commonly translated as either owls of various types, or ostriches, based on the King James Version of the Bible. First though, we can see in Leviticus 11:16 that owls of all types are held under Levitical law as being unclean fowl and abominable and are therefore not to be eater or even touched – for even touching an abominable thing is a serious offence which required formal ritual purification before one could be involved again in any religious ceremony.

The five are as follows:

[1] In Hebrew: בּת יענה or bath ya‛ănâh. Bath denotes the designation of a woman from a particular place as in “daughter-villages” and is a personification and description of character. Ya‛ănâh denotes an unclean bird, an owl, an ostrich, which is literally translated as “daughters of the owl.” This description is perhaps an extinct bird, for the exact meaning is unknown.
[2] In Hebrew: כּוס or kôs. Kôs denotes the combination of a cup (feminine) and a kind of owl (an unclean bird) (masculine) which comes from the root word meaning, to hold together. The cup part of the description is seen as relating to the eye of the owl.
[3] In Hebrew: ינשׁוף / ינשׁוּף or yanshûph / yanshôph. Yanshûph denotes the great owl or the eared owl, both of which are unclean animals under Levitical law.
[4] In Hebrew: לילית or lı̂ylı̂yth. Lilith denotes the name of a female goddess known as a night demon who haunts the desolate places of Edom. It is also believed to represent a nocturnal animal which inhabits desolate places. In all uses, it is a feminine noun.
[5] In Hebrew: תּחמס or tachmâs. Tachmâs denotes an ceremonially unclean bird and is usually given to a male ostrich or a great owl. However, the exact meaning is unknown and it may also relate to an extinct bird.

The owl is but one of 20 types of bird which are unclean under Levitical law. The 20 are: Eagle, Ossifrange, Ospray (Sea Eagle), Vulture, Kite, Raven, Owl (Ostrich), Night Hawk, Cuckow (Sea Gull), Hawk, Little Owl, Cormorant, Great Owl, Swan, Pelican, Great Eagle, Stork, Heron, Lapwing and Bat.

As far as they can be identified, the birds here mentioned here above species which live upon animal food. They were those which the Israelites might have been tempted to eat, either from their being easy to obtain, or from the example of other nations, and which served as types of the entire range of prohibited kinds.

The owl in particular is a creature of the night and is therefore associated with the demonic. Similarly the ostrich which appears to fall into the same classification here as the owl is known for its demonic night time noises, while the Lilith is directly associated with a night demon.

When one initially looks at the birds included in this prayer, the common thread of the demonic may not be clear to see. We hope this addendum provided further clarification.

Leviticus 11:16-20 “And you shall have these in abomination among the fowls. They shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, and the black vulture, and the bearded vulture, and the kite, and the falcon, according to its kind; every raven according to its kind; and the owl [1] (ostrich), and the great owl [5], and the gull, and small hawks, according to its kind, and the little [2] owl, and the cormorant, and the eared owl [3]; and the barn owl [3], and the pelican, and the vulture; and the stork, the heron according to its kind, and the hoopoe, and the bat. Every flying swarming creature going on all four, it is an abomination to you.”

Deuteronomy 14:12-18 “But you shall not eat of these: the eagle, and the ossifrage, and the osprey, and the hawk, and the falcon, and the vulture after its kind, and every raven after its kind, and the owl [1], and the night hawk, and the cuckoo, and the hawk after its kind, the little [2] owl, and the great owl [3], and the swan, and the pelican, and the owl, and the cormorant, and the stork, and the heron after its kind, and the hoopoe, and the bat.”

Job 30:29 “I am a brother to jackals, and a companion to daughters of the owl [1] (ostrich).”

Psalm 102:6 “I am like a pelican of the wilderness; I am like an owl [2] of the desert.”

Isaiah 13:21 “But the wild beasts of the desert shall lie there; and their houses shall be full of howling creatures; and owls [1] (ostriches) shall dwell there, and he-goats shall dance there.”

Isaiah 34:11-15 “But the pelican and the bittern shall possess it; the owl [3] also, and the raven, shall dwell in it. And He shall stretch out on it the line of shame, and the stones of emptiness. They shall call its nobles to the kingdom, but none shall be there, and all her rulers shall be nothing. And thorns shall come up in her palaces, nettles and thistles in its fortresses; and it shall be a home of jackals and a court for owls [1] (ostriches).
The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the howling beasts; and the shaggy goat shall cry to his fellow. The screech owl [4] also shall rest there, and find for herself a place of rest. There the snake shall nest, and lay, and hatch, and gather under her shadow; there shall the vultures also be gathered, every one with her mate.”

Isaiah 43:20 “The beasts of the field shall honour Me, the jackals and the owls [1] (ostriches); because I give waters in the wilderness, rivers in the desert, to give drink to My people, My chosen.”

Jeremiah 50:39 “So the beasts of the desert shall dwell there with jackals. And the daughters of the owl [1] (ostrich) shall dwell in her again. And it shall not again have anyone in it forever; it shall not be lived in until generation and generation.”

Micah 1:8 “Therefore I will wail and howl; I will go stripped and naked; I will make a wailing like jackals, mourn like the daughters of an owl [1] (ostrich).”
